Furnace Installation in Portland for New Systems and Conversions

Furnace installation in Portland for homes getting a gas furnace for the first time, adding forced-air heat, or converting from oil or electric heat. Efficiency Heating & Cooling sizes every system with a Manual J load calculation and installs it with NATE-certified technicians.

Most gas furnace installs run $4,495-$9,000, and premium variable-speed systems top out around $12,500. As an Energy Trust of Oregon Trade Ally, we confirm current incentives in your written estimate. Replacing a furnace you already have? See our furnace replacement service.

Furnace installation is different from swapping one furnace for another. On these jobs there is no working gas furnace to copy, so we design the system from scratch. That covers the size, the venting, the gas supply, and the ductwork it will connect to.

We install furnaces across the Portland metro from our offices in Milwaukie, Portland, and Happy Valley. Every install starts with a free in-home estimate and a Manual J load calculation, and every price is in writing before work starts.

Who needs a new furnace installation?

Most of our furnace installation work in Portland falls into four groups.

First-Time Gas Furnace

Homes heated by baseboards, wall heaters, or a wood stove that want central forced-air heat. We check whether gas service reaches the house, plan the duct runs, and size the furnace to the load calculation.

Oil-to-Gas Conversion

Many older Portland homes still have an oil furnace or a buried oil tank. We remove the oil furnace, run gas to the new unit, install proper venting, and connect to the existing ducts when they are in good shape.

Electric Furnace Conversion

An electric furnace makes heat the most expensive way. We replace it with a gas furnace where gas is available, or show you how a heat pump installation compares.

Add-On and Dual Fuel

Adding a gas furnace to pair with a heat pump, or adding forced-air heat to a remodel or addition. We size the furnace for the new space and check that the existing ducts can carry the air.

Already have a gas furnace that has worn out? That is a swap-out, and our furnace replacement service for existing gas furnaces covers it.

Furnace Installation Cost in Portland

Gas furnace installs in the Portland metro run $4,495-$9,000. The number depends on the furnace you choose and how much has to be built around it on a new or conversion install.

Premium variable-speed systems with the quietest operation and the most even heat.

What Moves the Price

Quoted in writing

A new gas line installation, new venting, duct changes, or electrical work. All of it is listed in your estimate.

Heat pumps and ductless mini-splits start at $5,995 if you would rather go all-electric. Special financing is available with approved credit, and as an Energy Trust of Oregon Trade Ally we list confirmed incentives in your written estimate.

Converting from oil heat in Portland

Oil heat is common in Portland's pre-war neighborhoods, and so are the tanks that fed it. Many sit underground in the side yard or under the driveway. A furnace conversion is the right time to deal with the tank, because once the new gas furnace is running, the tank has no job left.

Tank work is regulated separately from the furnace. Oregon's Department of Environmental Quality says that a homeowner who hires out heating oil tank decommissioning must use a licensed Heating Oil Tank Services Provider. We install the new furnace. The tank itself goes to a licensed tank provider, and we coordinate timing so you are not without heat.

The furnace side has its own details on an oil conversion. The old oil furnace often sits in a tight basement or crawlspace with a masonry chimney flue. A high-efficiency gas furnace vents through PVC pipe instead, which may let us retire the chimney flue for that appliance. If the gas meter is not already at the house, the gas utility has to set one before we can start up the furnace.

We check the existing ductwork during the estimate. Ducts built for an older oil furnace are often undersized or leaky. We test static pressure and tell you whether they can carry the airflow a new furnace needs, or whether some ductwork repair and modification belongs in the job.

How We Handle Your Furnace Installation

Most installs wrap up in one to two days. Conversions with new gas lines or duct changes can take longer, and your estimate says so up front.

Load Calculation

We run a Manual J load calculation to pin down the heating capacity your home needs. Square footage, insulation, windows, and air leakage all go into it.

System Design

We plan the gas supply, venting route, condensate drain, and duct connections, and we pull the permits.

Installation

Our NATE-certified installers set the new furnace to manufacturer specs and Oregon code. Gas piping is pressure tested before start-up.

Testing and Safety Checks

Combustion analysis, a carbon monoxide check, airflow measurement, and thermostat setup. We don't sign off until everything checks out.

Walkthrough and Paperwork

We show you the thermostat and filter schedule, register the manufacturer warranty, and submit Energy Trust paperwork for any confirmed incentive.

How much does furnace installation cost in Portland?

Most gas furnace installs in the Portland metro run $4,495-$9,000, and premium variable-speed systems top out around $12,500. On a first-time install or a conversion, a new gas line, venting, or duct changes can add to the price. Every cost is listed in your written estimate before work starts.

What rebates are available for furnace installation in Portland?

Energy Trust of Oregon offers incentives on qualifying high-efficiency gas furnaces. Its current residential table requires a furnace rated 95% AFUE or higher that is the home's primary heat source. As an Energy Trust Trade Ally, we confirm current offers for your home and list them in your estimate. Eligibility and offers can change. Do not count the federal Energy Efficient Home Improvement Credit toward a new 2026 installation; the IRS lists that credit for qualifying improvements through 2025.

How long does furnace installation take?

A typical install takes one to two days. First-time installs and oil or electric conversions can take longer when they need a new gas line, new venting, or duct changes. Your estimate gives the expected timeline before work starts.

What size furnace do I need for my Portland home?

Sizing depends on square footage, insulation, windows, air leakage, and Portland's climate. Our NATE-certified technicians run a Manual J load calculation to find the heating output your house needs. An oversized furnace short-cycles and wastes energy. An undersized one can't keep up during a cold snap.

Can you install a furnace in a home that has never had one?

Yes. On a first-time install we check whether gas service reaches the house, plan the duct runs, choose a location for the furnace, and plan the venting and condensate drain. If the home needs a gas line or a new meter, we list that work in the estimate and coordinate with the gas utility.

What's the difference between 80%, 90%, and 95% AFUE furnaces?

AFUE (Annual Fuel Utilization Efficiency) tells you how much of the fuel becomes heat. An 80% AFUE furnace turns 80 cents of every fuel dollar into heat, and the rest goes up the flue. A 95% AFUE unit converts 95 cents. Furnaces at 90% AFUE and above are condensing units that vent through PVC pipe and need a condensate drain, which affects the install plan.

Do you offer financing for furnace installation?

We do. Special financing is available with approved credit, with convenient monthly payments. We'll identify the current utility and Energy Trust incentives your installation may qualify for and list confirmed savings in your estimate. Eligibility and offers can change. Our team can put together a payment plan that works for your budget.

What's included in your furnace installation service?

Every install includes a Manual J load calculation, a written estimate, permits, removal of old heating equipment on a conversion, the new furnace with gas and electrical connections, venting, a condensate drain on high-efficiency models, combustion and carbon monoxide testing, thermostat setup, a homeowner walkthrough, and manufacturer warranty registration.

Tristan was very thorough with diagnosing the issues with my system and walked me through them so I could better understand my options for repair. We’ve had a few HVAC techs look at our system over the last decade or so, and Tristan was by far the best.

Jason came out for an estimate for a heat pump for my house. He listened to what I was looking for function-wise, evaluated the property, gave me a quote with 4 options, and explained the pros and cons of each. He was thorough, friendly, and not at all condescending (women, if you know, you know). Very professional.

Hire them immediately! Super fair pricing, great service. My Technician, Tristian was communicative and thorough. I tried hiring another company prior and they had me pre-pay, after tons of no shows and shoddy work followed by more no shows I demanded my money back and happily gave it to Efficiency Heating and Cooling.
