What can Portland homeowners check before calling?
These four checks are safe to do yourself. Leave burners, gas valves, wiring, and moving parts to a technician.
Thermostat
Set it to Heat, a few degrees above room temperature. Replace the batteries if the screen is blank. If it still won't call for heat, see what to do when the thermostat isn't working.
Air Filter
Slide the filter out and hold it to a light. If no light comes through, replace it, and check it monthly during heating season. How often to replace a furnace filter depends on its thickness and whether you have pets in the home. A filter that gets dirty within weeks can point to leaky ducts or another airflow problem.
