In some states, certain felonies may disqualify individuals from obtaining an HVAC license. It is essential to check with local authorities.

Requirements for Obtaining an HVAC License as a Felon

Meeting Licensing Requirements

Felons seeking an HVAC license must fulfill the requirements set by licensing boards. This includes completing accredited training programs, just like non-felons. By meeting these criteria, felons demonstrate their commitment to professional standards.

To obtain an HVAC license, individuals often need to complete specific courses related to heating, ventilation, air conditioning systems. These courses are crucial for acquiring the necessary skills and knowledge in the field. Passing exams is typically mandatory for both felons and non-felons pursuing licensure.

Disclosing Criminal History

During the licensing process in some states, requirements may entail disclosing criminal history information. Felons might be asked to provide details of past convictions or legal issues. Being transparent about their background allows authorities to assess applicants fairly and make informed decisions regarding licensure.

Impact of Felonies on HVAC Job Applications

Company Policies

Certain felonies can pose challenges for individuals seeking employment in the HVAC industry due to their severity and implications. However, not all offenses carry the same weight.

Background Checks and Time Since Conviction

Many HVAC businesses conduct thorough background checks as part of their hiring process. They may consider factors such as the type of felony committed and how long it has been since the conviction occurred before making a decision about employing someone with a criminal record.

Pros:

  • Some companies have flexible policies regarding hiring felons.

  • Individuals with certain types of felonies may still find opportunities in the HVAC sector.

Starting as an entry-level technician is a common path for felons entering the HVAC industry. By gaining experience, they can progress in their careers, moving up to higher positions over time.

Pros:

  • Apprenticeships provide practical training.

  • Entry-level positions allow skill development.

Cons:

  • Limited advancement opportunities initially.

While some companies may have strict policies against hiring felons, others consider individual circumstances before making a decision. Factors such as the type of offense, how long ago it occurred, and the individual’s conduct since then can influence whether a felon is hired.

Real Reviews

My heat pump was installed by Johnny Durango and Kellen, they got everything done on time just as a cold snap was moving in and showed me how to use the new thermostat.

A year and a half after installation, the unit stopped working, and I had to call out service again for a repair. Tristan came out to fix it, he diagnosed and repaired the problem quickly.
Response from the owner:Great job! Thanks for the wonderful review, Glenn! We really appreciate you taking the time to share your experience with Johnny Durango and Kellen. It's wonderful to hear that you felt taken care of in the midst of a cold snap! Your satisfaction is our number one priority and we strive to provide the highest quality service and customer experience. We hope you stay warm and happy this winter season!
We are happy that we went with Efficiency to install our new heat pump system. Our sales person, Jason was great to work with. The installer, Seven, went above and beyond for us - proficiently fixing a small issue with our roofing that had nothing to do with the install just because he saw it. When I had to call the office, everyone I spoke to was pleasant and effective. The pricing was on par or below having the same system installed by other comparable companies in the area. Though, given the great experience, it's hard to see why - I _almost_ feel like we should have paid more. 🙂

So, everything about the sale went perfectly, the install went perfectly, and the customer service was and is spot on.
Response from the owner:Your 5-star review made our day! Thanks for choosing us.
Great job! Great communication. Straightforward. Timely. Extremely helpful. I had them check out the recommendations from another company and they were able to test my furnace and explain it had no problems and could be used safely.

Very satisfied with this company they are family owned business and have been so easy to work with we are very pleased that we found them. We have talked to multiple places. Jason Sean is our technician/ agent who will be working with our unit very professional. We are super satisfied. If you’re not looking to spend a big portion of money right out of your pocket Right away this is your place to go. Chloe is a girl in the office. I gave her five stars. Response from the owner:Thank you so much for the fantastic 5-star review, Roger! We're thrilled to hear that you found our team at Efficiency Heating & Cooling Company professional and informative. It's great to know we could provide you with a tremendous job. We appreciate your support!
I was very happy with work by Efficiency on a recent heat pump installation
at my townhouse.

The team was very forthcoming in explanations of their recommendations and
reasons why.

Salesman Jason gave me a detailed breakdown of the cost estimate rather than just
one lump sum and hiding costs of individual items in the proposal.

He was very easy to talk to, answered all my questions directly
rather than being evasive, and did not try to pressure me with upselling
something I did not want.

I was given 2 quotes - one for a standard heat pump unit and one for a high
heat unit so I could clearly see what my options were.

Damian and Kellan were the two techs who handled my installation. Clearly very
competent and knew their trade. They were especially adept at handling the
difficult installation situation in my very cramped townhouse attic space. They
also were able to address a couple of unexpected situations in a very
innovative way without charging me more than what the original contract stated.

I was very happy with how the installation turned out and it met all of my
expectations.
