How to Fix a Furnace Blower Motor

There is nothing more annoying than the Furnace Blower Motor problems when the winter months start approaching. This is fairly common though as you have not used the blower for the rest of the year probably.

As you turn the blower on, you notice no heat coming out and when that happens it is usually because of a faulty motor.

Motors are a fundamental part of this unit. So, not only do you need to attend to any issues as soon as possible. You need to attend it or have it attended very carefully. And we are here for that. All you need to do is contact us and let us know the problem.

What goes wrong with the motors?

You might be facing lots of issues with the motor because of the dirt. This is a major cause of the failure of the motors and.

If the motor is not maintained properly, then there will be a more chance of the motor going bad quickly. And that is when you will need to replace it.

Sometimes the furnace blower makes noises. Do not be worried about the motor right away. This could be a problem with something else in your blower. Whenever there is an obstruction, the motor tries very hard to function properly. As a result, it gets heated up quickly and that is bad for the motor.

So, you need not always worry about the replacement right away. But we do encourage contacting us in case you would want to be efficient by finding out the correct underlying cause of the problem.

Although, we do encourage checking the fault and if it is a minor problem then you can surely attend it yourself.

We have a guide for that purpose here.

Troubleshooting

  1. Is the furnace getting its power?

The first thing you can do when the motor is unresponsive is check the power supply unit of the furnace. If you have had bad weather in your area, that could be one cause of the power being cut off. If there was a power outage that can be another reason. The surge in power causes shorting of the circuit and that could have caused the motor to fail.

So, this is the primary step that you need to check before you can look at the next steps. Because in any case if the motor has no power supply, it will not work.

  1. Thermostat

You cannot have the thermostat level too low. Always keep the setting of the thermostat to be more than the room temperature. At least 3 to 4 degrees more. You can then check the fan and see if it is working. The thermostat does not function without a fan.

There are other settings that you can check and set accordingly.

  1. Filters

The next thing that you can do is check all the vents and the filters for debris. If there is too much dirt clogged there, that will affect the functioning of the motor.

All the filters must be attached as the manual and the design suggests. That means you need to check whether or not you have the correct side up.

There are guides that you can check while installation. If you think that it is troublesome, contact us for help.

If you have checked everything and the problem persists, then the problem is with the furnace blower motor.

Now, the fixation method can vary from model to model. So we recommend you get the help and suggestions of a professional.

Replacing a Furnace Blower Motor

So you have checked everything and it is clear that your furnace blower motor is not spinning. This calls for a replacement.

And all you need to make sure is that you have all the required parts according to the model and you are good to go with replacing the motor all by yourself.

The Blower Furnace units are always designed in a way that you can replace the parts individually in case it goes faulty. But if you are confused and want to make sure that you get the right parts, then feel free to call us for help.

In case, you have all the necessary replacements available and want to go ahead with the process yourself then we have a guide prepared for you over here.

Take out the old motor

You need to make sure that you have all the patterns of the wiring system and the path all written down or taken a picture of. That is when you can go further with the process. Take out the motor.

  • You will need to disconnect the connections first.
  • Take the motor unit out.
  • Remove the bolts. Take the motor out of the furnace.
  • To take the motor out of the fan unit you will have to check all the screws that you need to take out.
  • The motor has a bracket that will be there fitted with the motor. But you need that bracket for the new motor installment. So, take out the bracket.

It is essential to have new parts that will be perfect for your unit. Do not go for cheaper models that are not trusted. Not only do these not last long but there is a good chance that they will not fit either.

How time affects the motor

How long has it been since you installed the furnace and when was the last time that the motor was replaced. It is a good choice to not let the motor run for more than 15 to 20 years. This is also the reason why your electricity bills might be affected. Old motors take up more power and that is bad altogether. The more efficient your unit is, the more you save.

So, sometimes even when the unit is working just fine, there are other problems that you might be neglecting if your furnace is way too old.
